We didn’t think we had options until we met Dan Koukol. Our journey to help David began with hours of internet research on felonies and numerous phone calls to attorneys in the area. We were limited on funds available to help him so we knew we needed to find someone who would do the job without trying to run up lots of attorney fees. I was arrested with multiple felonies against me and a couple of misdemeanors. And I was facing up to 12 years in prison and 290 (sex) registration.

I first spoke to Dan at my first court date where he told me that he had already talked with the prosecutor and the judge and that we were not looking at prison in my case. I am only 19 years old so I was so relieved to hear that. I had never been in trouble in my entire life but unfortunately I was dumb enough to talk to a girl who was under age about the wrong kind of things – which got me into the most trouble I have ever been in my entire life.

I was in a tunnel that seemed like it was pitch black at the end. I was in jail for most of my court dates. My grandfather had passed away a few weeks before I was arrested and his funeral was coming up.  If it wasn’t for Dan I would have missed his funeral all together. But Dan was there for me the whole time – he got the judge to let me out for 2 days to attend the funeral.

All along the way Dan told me that he had a good feeling about what we could do in my case.  Dan and I knew that I was going to be convicted of some charges, but which ones? Dan was hell bent on getting me out of having to be a 290 (sex) registrant for the rest of my life – this was our main goal.  Dan met with me quite a few times while I was in jail and he always seemed to have some good news.  On my 49th day of being in custody I went into court planning to waive my right to have my preliminary hearing within 60 days, but instead DAN GOT ME RELEASED FROM JAIL!  Not only was I released but I was released the day before my birthday!  I didn’t know what to think or how to thank him.  I was so excited to just be out and back with my family.

On my first court hearing after being released the prosecutor was not there so we had to put it off for another month which I was okay with.  On my second court hearing after being released Dan got the prosecutor to agree to allow me to plead to two new (different) charges that would make it so that I would NOT have to register as a sex offender. And only one was a felony but the best thing about that felony was that it is a “wobbler” meaning it can be reduced to a misdemeanor in the future.  On the third court date after my release when we went to court to seal the deal Dan was able to get the prosecutor to agree to lower my felony to a misdemeanor after 18 months and to give me time served meaning NO MORE JAIL TIME!  He also got me NO SEX REGISTRATION.  And last but not least after my 3 years of probation I can get my record expunged!

Dan Koukol quite literally saved my life. I was facing multiple felony charges, sex registration and 12 years in state prison.  In the end Dan got me one (reduce able) felony one misdemeanor no sex registration and 49 days of jail time.  All of this with the possibility of it ALL going away in three years.

 I am a professional sales representative residing in a white collar neighborhood with my wife and children.

 Recently, I made some bad decisions and was arrested in Placer County. Since I had previous judgments on my record, the charges were enhanced and I was facing the following dire circumstances: 3 felony convictions, a 2 year (minimum) state prison term, a permanent “strike” on my record, $15,000+ in fines, and the loss of my job. There were a lot of meetings between the judge, the prosecutor and Mr. Koukol to discuss my case. Dan Koukol was able to arrange alternative sentencing for me. This meant that for my old case and my new case, I could be on “electronic monitoring”. I did not have to go to jail and I was able to keep working.

I could tell that it was hard work for Mr. Koukol to keep me out of jail and allow me to keep my job. I am very pleased with the work he did on my behalf.
